L'esorcista - La genesi è un film statunitense del 2004 diretto da Renny Harlin: è il prequel del film L'esorcista di William Friedkin del 1973, e narra le vicende di padre Merrin, interpretato da Stellan Skarsgård (nel film di Friedkin, la stessa parte era interpretata da Max von Sydow).
In origine il film venne girato da Paul Schrader: la Morgan Creek non trovò il lavoro soddisfacente, licenziò il regista e assunse Harlin che lo rigirò, cambiando anche il cast, e facendone in sostanza un film horror. La versione di Schrader è uscita negli Stati Uniti nel 2005 col titolo Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist.

Il giovane prete Lankester Merrin dopo aver fatto un viaggio dall'Olanda all'Egitto per ritrovare la fede perduta dopo le atrocità della seconda guerra mondiale, si unisce a un gruppo di archeologi che lavorano per un collezionista. Il collezionista comunica a Merrin di aver trovato in una regione del Kenya sotto terra durante gli scavi una chiesa cristiana bizantina di 1500 anni, commissionando al prete di trovare una reliquia che raffigura un demone mitologico, Pazuzu. In poco tempo Merrin vedrà in azione i poteri del male, e indagando, scoprirà che la chiesa è stata costruita per intrappolare il demone assiro, ora libero. Merrin compirà il suo primo esorcismo e farà la prima prova di forza con il demone................
